Baked Plaice with Bacon

 This is a tasty and unusual way of cooking and serving plaice, or similar flat fish

Baked Plaice with Bacon


  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 back bacon rashers, chopped
  • 3 spring onions, chopped
  • 4 plaice fillets 175g each (6oz)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 60g (2oz) butter
  • Juice of 1/2 large lemon
  • 1 tbsp fresh chopped parsley


  1. Preheat the oven to 200c (400F/Gas 6) Heat the oil in a roasting tin over a medium heat. Add the bacon, spring onions and fry for 2 mins stirring frequently.
  2. Add the plaice skin side down, baste with oil and season to taste with pepper.
  3. Place the tin in the oven and bake the fish for 15 minutes, basting once or twice.
  4. Transfer the cooked plaice onto warmed serving plates. Drain the bacon and spring onions from the tin and set aside.
  5. Heat the butter in a small saucepan until golden brown, add the lemon juice, bacon and spring onions and stir in the parsley. Spoon over the plaice and set aside.
  6. Serve immediately.

Serve with stir fried or steamed vegetables
